Women's Soccer Knocked Out of SAC Tournament
WINGATE, N.C. -- Wingate posted three second-half goals to top visiting Catawba 4-1 in a first round match of the South Atlantic Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament on Tuesday at Pride Park. The Bulldogs improve to 10-3 and advance to Friday’s semifinals. The Catawba Indians end their season at 7-10.
Catawba scored first as Becky Frost drilled home a shot from 30 yards in the 20th minute. Wingate got the equalizer 10 minutes later as Kimmi Moore deflected in a cross from Taylor Leyble that had a touch from Gabby Fleishli.
Wingate took control with a pair of goal early in the second half that were less than two minutes apart. Moore put the Bulldogs on top as she scored off a through ball from Kristen DeBiase in the 51st minute then Taylor Krakower drove home a shot from the top of the box in the 53rd.
The Bulldogs added a final goal in the 64th minute as Krakower crossed a ball to Leyble. The Lady Indians held an edge in corners 6-2 with Wingate taking 18 shots to 14 for Catawba. Each team put eight on target. Alexis Jones made seven saves for the Bulldogs. Shelby Thompson recorded three saves for Catawba, while Liz Nail had one save over the final 32 minutes.
