Volleyball Defeats Queens in Four
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - - The Catawba Lady Indians defeated the Queens Royals in their South Atlantic Conference match on Friday night in Curry Arena. The 3-1 win for Catawba improves them to 4-18 overall and 2-15 in the conference. Queens drops to 18-6 and 12-5 in the conference.
Catawba was led by Micah Ensor, Abby Benton, and Kimberly Hurtado recording 12 kills each. Rachel Stanford added 11 kills, dished out 27 assists, and contributed to four blocks. Morgan Hester also handed out 26 assists while collecting 17 digs. Allison Benton led the defense tallying 29 digs.
Queens took the lead early in the first set but the Indians fought their way back to tie it at 19 all. A service error gave the Royals the lead again who finished out their only win of the night outscoring Catawba 5-2.
The Royals broke an 11 all tie in the second game and went on a run to go ahead 13-20. The Indians capitalize on six Queens’ errors, kills by Hurtado and Ab. Benton, and a service ace to tie the game at 23. A Royal kill put them ahead but Hurtado answered with a kill to make the score 24 all. Two straight errors for Queens handed Catawba the two points they needed to win the set 26-24 and even the match 1-1.
The Indians battled with the Royals in third set and jumped out to take a small lead after a Hurtado kill broke the 15 all tie. After a kill by Macy Eidenberger made the score 23-21, Queens took a timeout. The Royals scored three straight tying the set again at 23. Catawba and Queens then traded points and the lead for the next six points. A kill by Ensor tied the set for the last time at 29. Ab. Benton served a service ace to go up 30-29. Eidenberger scored the last point to win the set 31-29 and put Catawba up 2-1 in the match.
Catawba utilized the energy from the third game and jumped out to take the immediate lead in the fourth. Once the Indians broke a 5 all tie, they did not look back gaining a lead of eight in the middle of the game. Ab. Benton scored the 24th point of the game and Catawba’s match win was in sight. The Royals scored one more point to make the score 24-16. A kill by Stanford finished the game 25-16, giving Catawba the 3-1 match win.
The Indians travel to Cuddy Arena at Wingate University for a South Atlantic Conference match at 2 o’clock on Saturday.
