Volleyball Concludes Season with Sweep at Newberry
NEWBERRY, S.C. - - The Catawba Lady Indians concluded their 2017 season at Newberry on Saturday. Catawba swept the Wolves by the scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-22. The Lady Indians finish their season 6-19 overall and 4-16 in the South Atlantic Conference.
Abby Benton led the Indians with 10 kills and 11 digs. Jade Brooks added seven kills and 11 digs. Rachel Stanford handed out 19 assists while recording four aces and nine digs. Allison Benton collected 15 digs to lead the defense.
Newberry took the early lead in the first set. Catawba tied the score seven times during the set but was unable to take a lead until the final tie at 20 all. The Lady Indians capitalized on three Newberry attack errors and two kills by Ab. Benton to outscore the Wolves 5-0 to finish out the set with the win.
Catawba and Newberry kept the second set close until Newberry pulled out to a three point lead at 9-12. The Indians didn’t let the Wolves get ahead anymore and battled to tie the set at 12. Catawba and Newberry alternated points and the lead for the next four points before Catawba took the final lead at 17-16. Two kills by Ab. Benton, a kill by Allie Grubb, a Stanford ace and four Newberry errors rounded out the last eight points the Lady Indians needed to take the set.
The third set started much like the second; however, Catawba gained a three point lead at 9-6 and again at 11-8. Newberry tied the set at 11 and 12 before taking a two point lead. Catawba answered and tied the set again at 14. The teams swapped points and the lead again until Catawba regained the lead for the last time after breaking the 19 all tie with a kill from Ab. Benton. Kills from Ab. Benton, Grubb and Brooks, a Stanford ace and an attack error by the Wolves finished the set and match.
