Women's Basketball Falls at Fayetteville State
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Host Fayetteville State held Catawba to 16 second-half points in posting a 69-46 win in women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Capel Arena. The Broncos improve to 1-1, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-2.
Marshauna Butler paced Catawba with 18 points, hitting on 7-of-13 shots and a pair of three-pointers. Taisha DeShazo added nine points with Serena Brown picking up seven points with three assists. Talia Barnes grabbed seven rebounds.
Catawba led 30-29 at the break after Toni Tucker canned one of two at the line with a second to go in the first half. A layup by Morgan Franklin and a three-pointer by Butler pushed the Lady Indian lead to 35-29 early in the third quarter, but Fayetteville State would take over.
The Broncos out-scored Catawba 21-6 the rest of the quarter to take a 50-41 lead to the final 10-minute period. FSU had a 7-0 run over the final 1:26 of the quarter.
Butler kept the deficit in single digits with a pair of baskets early in the fourth quarter, but after her bucket with 7:35 to go, the Lady Indians would not score again until a free throw by Shemya Stanbeck with three ticks on the clock.
Jamesha Mosley led Fayetteville State with 12 points and seven rebounds. Breona Jones added 11 points with Danica Lucas scoring 10.
Catawba shot just 26% in the loss and went 2-of-21 (9.5%) in the fourth quarter. FSU knocked down 41% of its shots and were 21-of-27 at the line. The Broncos held a 47-34 edge on the boards which helped offset 25 turnovers.
Catawba next plays at Bowie State on Saturday in a game that will now tip at 6 pm.
