Shorthanded Men's Basketball Squad Overwhelmed by #4 LMU
HARROGATE, Tenn. -- A very shorthanded Catawba men’s basketball team was no match for fourth-ranked Lincoln Memorial as the host Railsplitters posted a 103-58 South Atlantic Conference victory on Saturday afternoon at Turner Arena. LMU improves to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 2-4 and 0-2.
Catawba played the game without both of its preseason All-SAC picks in Jameel Taylor and Jerrin Morrison, who were nursing injuries. Malik Constantine led the Indians with 16 points, on 6-of-8 shooting, while grabbing six rebounds. Peyton Pappas scored a dozen points off the bench. Jeremy McLaughlin added nine points and six boards.
Trevon Shaw connected on six three-pointer to lead LMU with 25 points. Cornelius Taylor hit 9-of-12 shots in scoring 21 points with five assists. Dorian Pinson tallied 17 points to go with five assists and four blocks. The Railsplitters made 16 three-pointers as a team.
Catawba matched LMU on the boards, but shot just 31% to 52% for the Railsplitters. LMU also committed a mere six turnovers, while helping force 17 Indian miscues.
Constantine scored Catawba’s first basket to tie the game at 2-2, but LMU would start to pull away. The Railsplitters scored seven straight points then pushed the lead 28-12 midway through the half. Lincoln Memorial led by as many as 36 in the opening half and went to the break with 61-27 edge.
After starting the season on the road, Catawba is finally set to host its first home game next Saturday at 4 pm vs. Tusculum.
