Women's Basketball Defeats Tusculum in Home League Opener
SALISBURY, N.C. - - Catawba women’s basketball opened their home league play with a 70-58 victory against the visiting Tusculum College Pioneers. The Catawba Lady Indians improve to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the South Atlantic Conference, while the Pioneers drop to 7-2 on the season and 2-1 in the conference.
Despite committing 25 turnovers, Catawba shot 53 percent from the field and 73 percent from the free throw line and outperformed Tusculum on the boards 42-26. The Lady Indians were led by Serena Brown’s double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Terri Rogers and Taisha DeShazo
each added 13 points for Catawba. Sydney Wilson and Kasey Johnson led Tusculum with 18 points each.
The Pioneers saw their only lead early in the first quarter. The Lady Indians took control of the game on a three by Brown and led by 13 with one minute left in the opening 10-minutes. Catawba started the second period with a 23-14 point edge. Tusculum narrowed the margin but only came within five at 28-23. The Lady Indians went on a seven point run to increase their lead to 12 with 3:26 left to play in the half. A Madison Hallman
three sent Catawba to the break with a 42-29 point advantage.
Brown, who scored seven of Catawba’s nine points in the third 10-minute period, opened the second half with a three. The Lady Indians were able to maintain control and took a nine point edge to the fourth quarter. Catawba found their groove again and shot 50 percent in the last 10-minutes. The Lady Indians went on a 12 to 4 point run to lead by 16 with 3:25 remaining in the game. Catawba closed out their home league opener with the 12 point win over Tusculum.
Catawba returns to action with a non-league game on Monday evening at 6 pm. The Lady Indians will host the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls.
