Hallman Cans Four Threes in Loss to Johnson C. Smith
SALISBURY, N.C. - - Madison Hallman drained four three’s in women’s basketball action on Monday night in Goodman Gymnasium, but the Catawba Lady Indians were unable to hold off the Golden Bulls from Johnson C. Smith University. The 52-51 loss drops Catawba to 4-5 on the season and improves J.C. Smith to 7-2.
Along with Hallman, Terri Rogers also scored 12 points to lead Catawba’s offense. Marshauna Butler and Serena Brown each added eight points. Butler pulled down seven rebounds, while Brown handed out seven assists for the Lady Indians. Jasmine Carter led the Golden Bulls with 14 points.
Hallman began the game with a three within the first minute of play. Catawba led the majority of the first 10-minute period, but lost control of the game when J.C. Smith took over after breaking the 9-all tie with 1:15 left in the quarter. The Golden Bulls took a 13-9 point edge into the second 10-minutes. The Lady Indians fought to keep the Golden Bulls within reach trailing by as many as eight, but only took a three point deficit to the break.
Catawba saw their second lead of the night in the third quarter after a layup by Talia Barnes gave them a one point advantage. Hallman canned a three to give the Lady Indians a 37-35 point lead with one second remaining in the third 10-minutes. The Golden Bulls broke away in the fourth quarter to lead by six with 1:58 left to play. Catawba continued to fight and two free throws by Rogers gave them the one point edge with only 16 seconds to go. J.C. Smith was able to inbound the ball and score within four seconds. The Lady Indians had the opportunity to win, but the Golden Bulls defense was able to hold them off for the one point win.
Catawba returns to South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday. They will host Anderson in Goodman Gym with a 2 pm tipoff.
