Late Surge Not Enough as Men's Basketball Falls to Wingate
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Wingate shot 53%, hit 13 three-pointers, and claimed an 85-77 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Tuesday morning at Goodman Gym. The Bulldogs improve to 6-6 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while the Indians fall to 3-7 and 0-5.
Wingate surged ahead midway through the first half. Leading 13-12, the Bulldogs went on a 13-2 run to go up 26-14 with 7:30 to go in the half. Zeriq Lolar capped the run with one of his five three-pointers.
The Bulldogs led 42-32 at the break and stormed out to a 64-45 lead in the first seven minutes of the second half. Wingate hit four three-pointers in the early part of the second half
Catawba made a run midway through the final half. Down 69-53, the Indians used a 10- run to get within 69-63 with eight minutes to play. A three-pointer by John McRae and a three-point play by Jordan Barber sparked the run.
Wingate stopped the bleeding on a three-pointer by Lolar and went up 79-69 on a three-pointer from Marco Haskins. Catawba never got closer than seven down the stretch.
Kerigan Farley had 21 points to lead four double-figure scorers for Wingate. Lolar had 17 points with Haskins and Neico Robinson each posting 16 points.
Catawba returns to action after the holidays, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne on Jan.3 for an 8 pm tip-off.
