Brown and Rogers Lead Women's Basketball Past #14 Wingate Bulldogs
SALISBURY, N.C. - - Catawba women’s basketball knocked off the visiting number 14 Wingate Bulldogs in South Atlantic Conference action on Tuesday afternoon in Goodman Gymnasium. The upset hands Wingate their first loss in conference play and only second loss of the season. The 60-47 win improves the Catawba Lady Indians to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs drop to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
Catawba shot 45% from the field and 77% from the free throw line. Serena Brown led the Lady Indians with 18 points and nine rebounds. Terri Rogers added 16 points, six rebounds, and a block for Catawba. The Lady Indians held the Bulldogs to their fewest points scored and lowest shooting percentage of the season. Danasia Witherspoon led Wingate with 13 points and was the only player to reach double digits for the team.
Catawba took the lead early in the first quarter on a three by Marshauna Butler. The Lady Indians defense held the Bulldogs to just two points the majority of the quarter, allowing them to only score three more points within the last three minutes. Catawba took a 16-5 point advantage into the second 10-minute period. The Lady Indians continued to control the game on both offense and defense. The Bulldogs could not come any closer than nine, while Catawba took a 30-16 point lead into halftime.
The Lady Indians did not let up after the break, increasing their lead to 18 midway through the third quarter and taking it to the fourth. The Bulldogs chipped away and broke the double digit advantage in the fourth 10-minute period. Catawba maintained composure and Brown hit five consecutive free throws to insure the 13 point win.
Catawba will travel to host Virginia Union in Richmond, Virginia, on December 27 for a 2 pm tipoff.
