Women's Basketball Falls to #9 Virginia Union in Return From Break
RICHMOND, Va. -- Catawba returned from its holiday break and suffered an 88-58 loss to ninth-ranked Virginia Union in women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Barco-Stevens Hall. The Panthers improve to 11-1, while the Catawba Indians fall to 6-6.
Virginia Union put five players in double figures to claim the win. Alexis Johnson came off the bench to lead the way with 18 points, hitting on 8-of-10 shots. Shareka McNeill added a dozen points, while Rejoice Spivey knocked down 11 points and handed out eight assists.
Terri Rogers was the lone Lady Indian in double digits with 17 points. She canned 8-of-12 shots. Elizabeth Webb had nine points, hitting on three 3-pointers. Catawba shot just 37% and suffered through 25 turnovers.
Virginia Union got off to a quick start, connecting on 55% of its shots in the first quarter to go up 29-15. The Lady Indians made just 5-of-17 (29%) shots in the opening frame. VUU never trailed after scoring the first four points and padded a 6-5 lead with an eight-point run and rolled to the win.
Catawba upped its percentage to 50% in the second quarter, but the Panthers were better at 56% in increasing their edge to 52-33 at the break. The outcome was decided in the third quarter as Catawba made just two shots, while VUU canned 64% to storm on top 73-40.
The Lady Indians return to league play after the New Year, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday for a 6 pm tip.
