McRae and Morrison Score 18 in Loss at LR
HICKORY, N.C. -- Host Lenoir-Rhyne used a big second half to top Catawba 85-63 in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Shuford Gym. The Bears improve to 5-8 overall and 3-4 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 3-8 and 0-6.
The Bears began to pull away late in the first half. After a tight battle for 16 minutes, LR used a late 10-2 run to lead 38-30 at the break. LR quickly pushed the lead to 18 in the first seven minutes of the second half and cruised to the victory.
Jerrin Morrison and Jon McRae led Catawba with 18 points apiece. Morrison added seven rebounds. Jeremy McLaughlin grabbed 10 rebounds and scored seven points with Jordan Barber dishing out six assists. Catawba played without starters Jameel Taylor and Malik Constantine, who were out with injuries.
Djibril Diallo tallied 26 points for the Bears, while grabbing six rebounds and posting seven assists. Cory Thomas collected 23 points and Jarvis Calhoun added 11.
The Bears shot 57% for the game and canned 62% of its attempts in the second half. Catawba hit on just 39%.
Catawba is on the road again Saturday as the Indians take on Carson-Newman at 4 pm in Jefferson City, Tenn.
