Men's Basketball Gets First League Win, Topping Coker 77-71
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba placed five players in double figures in earning its first league win with a 77-71 victory over visiting Coker in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians snap a four-game losing streak in improving to 4-9 overall and 1-7 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 7-9 and 4-4.
Catawba, who led most of the game and by as many as 10 in the opening half, had to rally late to earn the win. Down seven with just over six minutes left, the Indians stormed back to lead 69-65 with 2:17 left. A five-point spurt by John McRae, who had a three-point play and another drive for a basket, broke a 64-all tie.
Coker took one last lead on a three-pointer by Khalil Halls at 70-69 with 1:38 remaining. Jerrin Morrison put the Indians back on top before Donte Samuels tied the game at 71, making the second of two free throws tries with 58 seconds remaining.
Catawba scored the final six points to take the win. Malik Constantine’s jumper with 45 seconds left made it 73-71 and Morrison added two free throws after rebounding a miss on a Coker three-point try with 19 seconds to play. McRae got the final basket on a break-away dunk with five seconds remaining.
Morrison, with 23 points and 13 boards, and Jeremy McLaughlin, with 10 points and 10 rebounds, posted double-doubles for Catawba. McRae and Constantine each tallied 14 points with Jordan Barber chipping in with 11 points.
Halls posted 23 points for Coker. Demarco Jackson added 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Donte Samuels collected 11 points and 12 boards. Samuels did most of his damage at the line where he went 9-for-10, but struggled to a 1-for-15 night from the field.
Coker shot just 29% in the opening half and saw Catawba run out to a 37-28 lead at the break. The Cobras pulled even four minutes into the second half and used a 13-2 run to take a 60-53 lead with 8:11 remaining. The Indians tied the game at 64-all after Morrison made a free throw then scored after rebounding his own miss.
Catawba hosts Mars Hill on Saturday at 4 pm in Goodman Gym.
