Team Effort Leads to Victory Over Mars Hill
SALISBURY, N.C. - - A whole team effort from Catawba Women’s Basketball lifted them past visiting Mars Hill for an 80-56 victory on Saturday afternoon in Goodman Gymnasium. The Catawba Lady Indians improve to 9-7 on the season and 7-2 in the South Atlantic Conference, while the Mars Hill Lions drop to 1-17 overall and 0-10 in the conference.
Catawba shot for 35% from the field and 77% from the free throw line with all team members seeing action in today’s game. Terri Rogers led the Lady Indians with her second double-double of the season, posting 18 points and 10 rebounds. Serena Brown added 15 points and Taisha DeShazo
contributed 11 to Catawba’s win. Mars Hill shot 31% from the field and was led by Gabby Gianikos’ 16 points.
The Lady Indians took control of the game immediately, only allowing Mars Hill to tie it at 4 before going on an 11-2 run to take their largest lead of the first quarter. Catawba took a 17-11 point edge into the second 10-minute period. The Lady Indians continued building on their lead and saw a double-digit advantage half way through the second. Catawba finished the first half with a 38-27 point margin.
Catawba came out unrelenting after the break, growing their lead to 20 as the third 10-minute period came to a close. The Lady Indians never backed off the pressure they put on the Lions in the fourth quarter. Catawba had their largest lead of 27 with one minute remaining and ended the game with a 24 point edge.
The Lady Indians will be back in South Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday as they travel to Newberry, SC. Catawba and Newberry will tipoff at 6 pm.
