Balanced Attack Leads Men's Basketball Over Mars Hill
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba helped force 29 Mars Hill turnovers, leading to 32 points, in an 83-68 South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball victory on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 5-9 overall and 2-7 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 2-15 and 0-10.
Catawba was led by Jerrin Morrison, who scored 17 points and recorded five of the Indians’ 18 steals. Carter Phillips followed with 11 points, while John McRae, DJ Johnson and Malik Constantine each added nine points.
Mars Hill scored the game’s first basket on a Bennett Wilson jumper just under a minute into the game. Jordan Barber’s three-pointer at the 18:03 mark gave Catawba the lead for good. That started an 8-0 Catawba run and the lead grew to 20-9 midway through the half.
The Lions closed within 22-19 on a three-pointer by Luke Van-Rijn with 5:45 to go before the half. A basket by Morrison and two by Phillips pushed the Indians back up 28-19. Catawba took a 34-26 edge to the break. The Indians led by double figures for nearly the entire second half.
Wilson scored 17 points for Mars Hill, while adding seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Austin Gilyard followed with 14 points. Van-Rijn collected nine points with Nassyr Daniel grabbing nine rebounds.
Catawba travels to Newberry on Wednesday for an 8 pm tip-off.
