Men's Basketball Falls to Newberry 92-87
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Visiting Newberry rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit to claim a 92-87 win over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Thursday night at Goodman Gym. The Wolves improve to 9-8 overall and 4-6 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 5-10 and 2-8.
Catawba trailed early in the second half, but used an 11-0 run to go on top 65-53 with 9:46 to go. The lead reached 13 after a three-pointer by Carter Phillips at the 8:24 mark, putting the Indians up 70-57.
The lead was still 11 when Newberry connected on three-pointers on consecutive possessions to make it 79-74. The Wolves eventually pulled even on a three-pointer by Xavier Hill with 2:57 left.
Newberry went up 87-85 after a pair of free throws by Rob Valentine, but the Indians quickly tied it on a dunk by John McRae with 43 seconds to play. That would be Catawba’s last points as Valentine answered with a three-point play and a 90-87 lead with 33 seconds left.
The Indians missed a three-pointer and Valentine added a free throw for a four-point margin. After two more Catawba misses, Hill netted the final point on a free throw with a second left.
