Rogers Leads Women's Basketball Past Queens
SALISBURY, N.C. - - Catawba defeated visiting Queens University 63-60 in women’s basketball on Wednesday evening in Goodman Gymnasium. The win improves the Catawba Lady Indians to 11-8 on the season and 9-3 in the South Atlantic Conference, while the Queens’ Royals falls to 4-14 and 1-11 in the conference.
The Lady Indians shot 37% from the field and 56% from the free throw line. Terri Rogers led Catawba with 20 points, with Toni Tucker adding 10. Queens shot 49% and was led by Lade Adepoju’s 23 points.
Catawba shot for just 19% in the opening 10-minute period, trailing Queens by five at the buzzer. The Lady Indians responded with six straight points to open the second quarter. Catawba had their largest lead of five with under three minutes to play. Queens answered with a 5-0 run and the teams took a 27-all tie to the break.
The Lady Indians scored first on a 3-point basket by Taisha DeShazo to begin the third quarter. Catawba built a six point edge before falling behind by five at the end of the 10-minute period. The Lady Indians started the fourth quarter with an eight point run to take back control of the game. The eleventh and final tie of the game came at 50-all midway through the last 10-minutes. Catawba kept composure and closed out the final minutes for the win.
The Lady Indians will travel to Greeneville, TN to take on host Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday at 2 pm.
