Despite 27 Points From Morrison, Men's Basketball Falls Just Short at Wingate

WINGATE, N.C. -- Host Wingate rallied in the second half to edge Catawba 84-80 in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs improve to 11-10 overall and 8-5 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 6-13 and 3-11.

Catawba built a 10-point halftime lead to 13 early in the second half, but Wingate whittled away at the deficit and retook the lead at 56-54 on a layup by Devarious Christian with 10:42 remaining. Carter Phillips had the Indians ahead 60-58 on a three-pointer with 7:48 to go and a free throw by Malik Constantine tied the game at 61-all with 5:31 left.

With the game tied, Marco Haskins made three-pointers on consecutive possession, turning the second into a four-point play, to push the Bulldogs up 68-61. Wingate hit on six straight shots, three coming from long range, to hold a 77-70 lead with 2:17 to go.

Catawba got close late. Morrison hit a layup and two three-pointers as Catawba closed the gap to 80-78 with 18 seconds to go. The Bulldogs sealed the game as Emarius Logan hit four free throws around a tip-in by Phillips. The last coming with four second to play.

Morrison led all scorers with 27 points, hitting on 10-of-19 shots with five three-pointers. He was the lone Indian in double figures. Constantine followed with nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Phillips and Tae Cannon chipped in with eight points each, while TJ Jeffers handed out eight assists.

Wingate put five players in double figures, led by Logan and Zeriq Lolar with 19 each. Haskins added 16, with Kerigan Farley picking up 14 and Christian 10. Christian added nine rebounds.

The Indians controlled much of the first half, turning a 17-16 deficit into a 25-17 lead on three-pointers by RJ Robinson, Phillips and Constantine. Wingate inched within four before Catawba closed the half on a 6-0 run that was capped by Morrison’s four-point play with just a second left to lead 38-28.

The stats were mostly even, except at the free throw line. Catawba outshot Wingate 50% to 48%, hit 11 three-pointers to Wingate’s 12, had one more rebound and one more turnover, but were just 7-of-15 at the stripe, while the Bulldogs canned 14-of-16.

Catawba stays on the road and travels to Anderson on Saturday for a 2 pm tip off with the Trojans.
