Softball Rallies For Split With Augusta
SALISBURY N.C. -- Catawba split a season-opening softball doubleheader with Augusta on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. Augusta won the opener 6-0, while the Catawba Indians took the split with a walk-off 4-3 win in game two.
Augusta took control with a five-run fourth to go up 6-0. The first five batters reached in the frame with Lindsey Stokes singling home two. Savannah Gabriel, Bella Fernandez, Ashley Boyd and Kelsea Hunter all had two hits. Morgan Hunter pitched the shut out, scattering seven hits. Freshman Jordan Dean had two hits for Catawba. Brooke Walser took the loss, striking out four batters over the three innings she pitched. Catawba left seven runners on base.
Dean provided all the runs for Catawba, including her walk-off double with one out in the seventh. She had tied the game earlier with a two-run homer.
Sydney Goertzen reached on an error to start the Catawba seventh. After an out, Carlee Brawley and Allie Baker singled to load the bases for Dean. Dean drove the first pitch she saw to the wall in center to plate Goertzen and Brawley to lift the Lady Indians.
Augusta had took a 2-0 lead in the second. Kelsea Hunter singled home a run and Carolyn Edwards drew a bases-loaded walk. Catawba would rally in the fifth to match Augusta. Carlee Brawley would single through the left side to get on base with one out. Dean would homer with two outs to tie the game.
Augusta would come back with a lead in the top of the sixth. Edwards came across to score an unearned run after a two-out error by Dean. That set the stage for the freshman to redeem herself with the walk-off hit.
Brawley joined Dean with two hits in game two for Catawba. Walser got the win, recording the last out of the seventh. Madison Hunter allowed just one unearned run over five innings of relief. She gave up four hits, walked six and fanned five.
Catawba will travel to Limestone Wednesday for a 1 pm doubleheader.
