Setzer and Poteat Homer in 12-11 Loss to Lynn
BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Catawba’s offense got going in its third game to open the season in Florida, but came up a run short in a 12-11 loss to host Lynn in baseball action on Saturday afternoon at the Lynn Baseball Field. The Fighting Knights improve to 2-0 on the year after topping top-ranked Delta State on Friday. The Catawba Indians, ranked 18th, fall to 0-3.
Catawba jumped out to a lead with a pair of runs in the first. Two-out doubles by Chance Bowden and Kyle Smith put the first run on the board, while Butts singled home Smith. Lynn took its first lead in the third. Willie Seay’s home run followed an error to tie the game, while the Golden Knights went on top with singles by Patrick Dorrian and Jake Rouse.
The Indians responded with four runs in the fourth. Run-scoring singles by Harrison Baucom and Nester was followed by Setzer’s two-run homer. Lynn grabbed control in the fifth. Dorrian connected on a two-run homer, while Seay capped a five-run frame with a bases-clearing double with two outs.
Poteat hit a solo home run in the seventh and helped the Indians cut the margin to a run with a two-run single in the eighth. That would be the last baserunner for Catawba as Daniel Nuzzi came on to retire Bowden then worked a perfect ninth for the save.
Seay had three hits and seven RBI to pace Lynn. Dorrian added three hits and drove in four.
Catawba wraps up its opening weekend trip against 12th-ranked Nova Southeastern on Sunday at noon.
