Baseball Gets Homers from Queen and Shepherd in Loss to Nova
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Nova Southeastern pulled away late to post a 25-6 win over visiting Catawba in baseball action on Sunday afternoon at the NSU Baseball Complex. The 12th-ranked Sharks improve to 3-1, while the 18th-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 0-4.
Joe Butts and Kyle Smith each had two hits for Catawba. Zach Queen and Hunter Shepherd hit home runs in the loss. Clay Young started and took the loss, working two innings and allowing four runs. Ryan Khany faired best of the Indians’ 11 pitchers as he closed the game with a perfect inning of relief. He had one strikeout.
After Butts doubled home a run in the third, Catawba was down 4-2. The Sharks answered with three in their third and two more in the fourth to go up 9-2. Shepherd’s home run in the fifth trimmed the deficit to 9-4, but Nova Southeastern scored a run in the fifth then broke the game open with a seven-run sixth. The Sharks added eight more runs in the eighth.
Leadoff man Andrew Labosky went 5-for-7 with a pair of home runs for the Sharks. He drove in seven runs and scored four times. Bryan Diaz also homered and had four RBI. Johnny Leone grabbed the win. He allowed four runs over his five innings, allowing nine hits and striking out seven.
Catawba travels to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday for a 4 pm first pitch with the 33rd-ranked Crusaders.
