BELMONT, N.C. - - Belmont Abbey scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to knock off Catawba Tuesday evening at Abbey Yard. The 5-6 loss drops the 18th-ranked Indians to 0-5, while the 33rd-ranked Crusaders improve to 3-1.

Kyle Smith and Cameron Morrison each had two hits for Catawba. Luke Setzer drove in two runs while going 1-for-1 with three walks. Chance Bowden also had two runs batted in for the Indians.

A sacrifice fly by Setzer put Catawba’s first run on the board in the top of the third. Belmont Abbey took their first lead in the bottom of the fourth. The bases were loaded by walks and a two-out single by Josh Genthe scored two for the Crusaders.

The Indians answered in the top of the fifth with three runs. Smith reached on a fielding error and scored on a Morrison double. Morrison advanced to third on Jacob Nester’s sacrifice bunt and scored on a single from Setzer. Mike Manoogian reached on a walk prior to Setzer’s single, which advanced him to second base. He moved up again on a single by Harrison Baucom and scored on Bowden’s sacrifice fly to post the third run of the half-inning.

Catawba scored their final run of the game in the top of the seventh. Manoogian led off the inning with a single to left field. Setzer walked on a 3-2 count, advancing Manoogian to second. A sacrifice bunt by Baucom and a groundout to short stop by Bowden moved Manoogian around the bases to score.

Belmont Abbey scored again in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Luke Cureton. They held Catawba to a scoreless 9th and went into the bottom trailing 5-3. A pair of singles and a fielding error loaded the bases for the Crusaders. Nick Beinlich doubled down the left field line to score two to tie the game. The Indians intentionally walked Matt McGarry to load the bases again. A single by Corey Rosenbaum scored AJ Hendricks and ended the game.

Rosenbaum led the Crusaders’ offense with two hits. Genthe and Beinlich each drove in two runs for Belmont Abbey.

Catawba will play their first home game of the season on Friday. They will host Palm Beach Atlantic for a three-game series. The Indians and Sailfish will play a double-header Friday beginning at 3:30 pm and concluding with a single game on Saturday.
