Barber Scores Four Goals For Men's Lacrosse in Opening Loss
BELMONT, N.C. -- Host Belmont Abbey jumped to an early lead and posted a 18-10 win over Catawba in men’s lacrosse action on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field. The 10th-ranked Crusaders improve to 2-0, while the Catawba drop their opener.
Belmont Abbey scored the first six goals and led 11-1 with just under four minutes left before the half. The Crusaders took an 11-2 edge to the break.
Joe Barber, who led Catawba with four goals, notched his first with a minute to go before the half then added a second midway through the third. Barber’s goals started a 7-2 scoring run for the Indians that pulled the visitors within 13-7 early the fourth.
The Crusaders responded, scoring five of the next six goals, to put the game out of reach.
Barber added an assist to his team-high four goals. Cole Fanzo and Liam Lynch each scored a pair of goals. Hunter Cheuvront played the final three quarters in goal for the Indians and recorded nine saves.
Adam Wiedemann tallied six points for the Crusaders, scoring a pair of goals with four assists. Liam Osborne had a goal and four assists, while Callum Tanner had two goals and a pair of assists.
Catawba travels to Mount Olive on Saturday, Feb. 17 for its next game with the Trojans at 1 pm.
