PEMBROKE, N.C. -- Catawba split a doubleheader with UNC Pembroke on Friday afternoon at the UNCP Softball Field. Catawba won the opener 6-4 while Pembroke took the split with an 8-0 shutout win in game two. Catawba stands at 2-2 on the season, while the Braves are 3-5.

Game 1:
The Lady Indians trailed 3-0 entering the seventh, but would rally with six runs. Delane smith got the comeback started with two-run home run to left center. Kaylee Cook and Ashley Wagoner followed with back-to-back doubles to tie the game. An error put runners on the corners then Beth Ann Martin, who had re-entered for Wagoner, came home on the back end of a double steal to put Catawba up 4-3.

Leah Huggins tripled home another run then came home on a wild pitch for a 6-3 edge. UNC Pembroke got a run back in the seventh on a two-out double by Taylor Gerhart, but Preston Ellenberg got the final out to take the win in relief.  She tossed the final two and two-thirds innings, allowing one run off four hits.

Smith and Cook had two hits in the win for Catawba. Cara Davis and Toni Nelson had two hits for UNCP. Davis singled home the game's first run in the third. The Braves added two more in the fifth, aided by a Catawba error.

Game 2:
Jamie Johnson got UNC Pembroke off to a quick start in game two, connecting on a three-run homer in the first. That would be the only runs scored until the sixth inning when UNCP would push across five additional runs to end the contest.

Breezy Yelton pitched the six-inning shutout for the Braves. She scattered four hits and struck out five batters. Johnson finished with two hits and four RBI. Alyssa Price had two RBI. Anna Jasper took the loss, allowing three over three innings. Cook added another hit in game two, giving her three for the doubleheader.

Catawba will travel to Belmont Abbey Thursday for a 1 pm doubleheader.
