Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Palm Beach Atlantic
SALISBURY, N.C. - - Catawba dropped both games of the doubleheader against visiting Palm Beach Atlantic in baseball action at Newman Park on Friday. The Catawba Indians fell to the Sailfish 7-9 in game one before dropping game two 3-12. The Indians are now 0-7, while Palm Beach Atlantic improves to 3-3.
Catawba took a 4-0 lead after three innings in game one. A two out walk followed by a Kyle Smith homerun put the Indians on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Catawba scored two more in the bottom of the third on back-to-back singles by Joe Butts
and Chance Bowden.
Palm Beach Atlantic answered with two runs in the top of the fourth. The Indians added another run in the bottom of the fifth on a fielding error that followed a triple by Lee Poteat
. The Sailfish posted a three run inning in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 5. Luke Setzer
responded with a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead for the Indians.
Kyle Simon homered to add a run for the Sailfish in the top of the seventh, but three two-out walks loaded the bases in the bottom for the Indians. Setzer scored on a wild pitch to take a 7-6 lead into the eighth. Riley Herold hit a 3-run, 2-out homerun in the top of the 9th for Palm Beach Atlantic to take game one.
The Sailfish jumped out to an 11-0 lead in game two. A SAC fly by Joe Butts
scored Catawba’s first run in the bottom of the fifth. Palm Beach Atlantic scored one more run in the top of the sixth. DJ Laxton
entered the game in relief, pitching four scoreless innings while the Indians added a two-out run in the 7th and one more in the 9th.
Smith led the offense for the Indians posting five hits and three RBI for the day. Setzer, Poteat, and Bowden each added three hits for Catawba. Palm Beach Atlantic was led by Herold’s five hits.
Catawba and Palm Beach Atlantic will conclude the three game series on Saturday at noon.
