Women's Lacrosse Drops Opener to #2 Florida Southern
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Florida Southern, the 2017 NCAA II runner-up and preseason #2 in the nation, handed Catawba a 24-6 loss in women’s lacrosse action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium. It was the opener for both teams.
The Mocs scored the first seven goals to grab quick command in the opening nine minutes. Catawba settled in over the next five minutes, getting a pair of goals from Gianna Pezzulo and another from Nicole Hunt to close within 9-3. The would be all the scoring for the Lady Indians in the opening half as Florida Southern pulled out to a 15-3 lead at the break.
Pezzulo notched her third goal to start the second half for Catawba, but the Mocs put home the next five goals to lead 20-4 entering the final 15 minutes. Imani Grays and Brooklyn Tilley added late goals for the Lady Indians. Madison Anselmo posted a dozen saves over her 53 minutes in the pipes.
Florida Southern held a commanding 46-13 edge in shots. Emily Santoli led the Mocs with four goals. Marina Jozokos, Dani Bursinger, Catherine DeKorte and Aubriana Benedett all scored three goals.
Catawba is home again on Thursday as the Lady Indians host Chowan at 6 pm.
