Home Runs from Butts and Raper Help Lift Baseball Past Palm Beach Atlantic
SALISBURY, N.C. - - Joe Butts and Jackson Raper hit their first home runs of the season in Catawba’s win over Palm Beach Atlantic in Newman Park on Saturday. The 6-5 win marks Catawba’s first win of the season and improves the Catawba Indians to 1-7. The Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish drop to 3-4.
Jacob Nester led the Indians offense going 3-for-4. Butts added two hits and had five of the six runs batted in. Luke Setzer, Chance Bowden, and Raper all contributed two hits for the Indians as well. Michael Elwell got his first win of the season, allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out five over five innings. DJ Laxton recorded his first save, allowing three runs on five hits over four innings.
The Sailfish scored first in the top of the third on back-to-back doubles. The Indians responded in the bottom with two runs on a Butts double down the right field line.
Raper led off a 4-run fifth inning with a home run to right field. Nester and Setzer followed with a single and a double, respectively. Butts scored the two baserunners on a 3-run home run to left field.
Palm Beach Atlantic scored a run in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Sean Houck led the Sailfish offense with three hits and a RBI.
The Indians return to Newman Park for a midweek game against Belmont Abbey on Wednesday at 4 pm.
