Crucial Free Throws Lift Women's Basketball Past Coker
HARTSVILLE, SC - - Last second free throws by Serena Brown pushes Catawba Lady Indians passed host Coker in women’s basketball action on Wednesday evening. The 63-60 victory improves Catawba to 13-11 overall and 11-6 in the South Atlantic Conference, while the Coker Cobras fall to 8-15 on the season and 5-12 in the SAC.
Catawba shot 28% from the field and 75% from the free throw line. Terri Rogers led the Lady Indians with 16 points and seven rebounds. Brown added 13 and Taisha DeShazo
recorded 11 points for Catawba. Coker shot 44% and was led by Janea Williams 13 points.
Coker controlled the first quarter, only trailing for a short time early. The Cobras had an 18-12 edge going into the second 10-minute period. The Cobras remained in control and built their lead to 11 to go into half time.
After the break, Coker led by as many as 17 in the third quarter. Catawba did not quit fighting and began chipping away at lead in the fourth 10-minute period. The Lady Indians took the lead with 4:49 remaining on the clock. The Cobras put pressure on Catawba but the Lady Indians maintained composure and regained the lead after both ties late in the game. With 1.5 seconds left in regulation, a Cobra foul then a double technical sent Brown to the free throw line. Brown hit two then Sydney Shull shot the technical free throw shots for Coker and went 1-for-2. Brown hit her final two shots and Coker failed to get off a final shot.
Catawba will return to Goodman Gymnasium as they host Carson-Newman on Senior Night at 2 pm.
