Featherstone Part of Three Records on Day Two of BMC Championships
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Sophomore Claire Featherstone highlighted Thursday’s day two action for Catawba at the the2018 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Swimming Championships being held at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center. Featherstone was part of three school record swims which came in the 50 free, 100 back and the 400 medley relay. The women stand in fifth with 102 points, while the men are also in fifth with 243 points.
Thursday’s night session opened with the women’s 500 free and Regan Nolan had the best finish, coming in 13th in a time of 5:14.17. Mariel-Marcia Erhart placed 14th as she posted a time of 5:17.08. Lea Hartwig placed 17th (5:19.21) and Emily Najar 19th (5:23.71).
Michael King made the A final on the men’s side and took seventh. His time of 4:38.79 was the ninth nest in school history. Lucas Rhodes won the bonus final, finishing 17th in a time of 4:43.38. Robert McCue was 32nd in a time of 5:03.20.
Federico Borrego Higareda won consolation final as he finished ninth with his time of 1:50.47, fourth best all-time. Matt Arnold was 32nd with a time of 1:59.66.
The women did not advance out of the prelims with Taylor Fair finishing 17th in a time of 2:11.54 which was the fourth best time in school history. Jess Daniel’s time of 2:17.02 was 26th.
Featherstone set her first school mark, placing 11th. She became the first female to swim under 24 seconds, finishing at 23.87. That time was also a NCAA II ‘B’ cut time. Natalie Standard placed 23rd (25.41), Kristina Rogge 24th (25.43)
Gatlin Saylors finished 14th for the men in a time of 21.12, while Joao Barreto was just behind in 15th (21.46). Arnold Blohme took the 34th place spot with a time of 21.97.
400 Medley Relay
Featherstone opened the women’s relay with a record 57.23 split to lower her own school mark. She was joined on the team by Rogge, Daniel and Hartwig. Their time of 3:55.97 took just over a second off the previous mark.
The men also finished fifth. The team of Saylors, Higareda, Barreto and King swam a time of 3:21.98. It marked the fourth best time in school history.
The Championships will continue through Saturday at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.
