Bowden Ties Career Doubles Record in Win Over Shippensburg
SALISBURY, N.C. - - Luke Setzer, Kyle Smith, and Hunter Shepherd all homered in the Catawba Indians 11-2 win over Shippensburg on Friday evening in Newman Park. Catawba improved to 2-8 and Shippensburg falls to 0-1.
Riley Myers allowed only one run with six hits and 10 strikeouts over seven innings to get his first win of the season. Shepherd went 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Indians’ offense. Chance Bowden tied the school record of 69 career doubles as he went 4-for-5 with two doubles.
Joe Butts, Bowden, and Smith loaded the bases by reaching on a dropped third strike followed by two singles. Shepherd hit a two-out single to left center to score Butts and Bowden and gave Catawba a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Smith homered to left center after Bowden doubled to right center to put up two more runs for Catawba in the bottom of the third. Shepherd also hit a home run to increase the Indians’ lead to 5.
Shippensburg posted their first run in the top of the fourth inning. Setzer homered down the left field line in the bottom and made the score 6-1.
The Indians recorded another three run inning in the bottom of the fifth, while adding a run in the sixth and seventh innings.
Cash Gladfelter led the Raiders offense with three hits and one run batted in.
Catawba and Shippensburg will play game two of the series on Saturday at 11 am and will conclude the series on Sunday at noon.
