Women's Lacrosse Drops Tight Game at UVA-Wise
WISE, Va. -- Kristin Gobbi scored with 2:04 left as UVA-Wise won a see-saw women’s lacrosse game 13-12 over visiting Catawba on Sunday afternoon at Carl Smith Stadium. The Cavaliers win their opener, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-2.
Catawba trailed 8-5 late in the first half, but a goal from Erin Green to close within 8-6 at the break. Green scored in the first minute of the second half which was followed by tallies from Brooklyn Tilley and Katie Barth to put the Lady Indians on top for the first time with 25:22 remaining.
The teams were never separated by more than a goal once Green had opened the second half scoring to draw Catawba within 8-7. After Barth’s goal, McKayla Grasham answered for Wise before Imani Grays had Catawba back in front with 13:22 to go.
Gobbi and Jesse French gave the Cavaliers the edge with back-to-back goals before Jillian Kurolvech tied things at 11-all with 6:43 left. Grasham put Wise up 12-11 with 6:05 remaining, but Grays evened the score at the 4:51 mark. Wise got a man-up advantage on a Catawba four with 2:18 to go and Gobbi took advance 14 seconds later with the eventual game-winner.
Barth, Green, Tilley, Grays and Gianna Pezzulo all had two goals for Catawba. Gobbi had four goals for Wise. Both teams took 32 shots. The Lady Indians won three more draw controls, but suffered five more turnovers. Madison Anselmo had 10 saves in goal for Catawba.
Catawba hosts Mount Olive on Tuesday at 4 pm.
