Football tops Wingate 35-14WINGATE, NC -- Catawba College junior quarterback Luke Samples (Elkin, NC) completed 14-of-20 passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns as the Indians defeated host Wingate University 35-14 in South Atlantic Conference football action Saturday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus. Catawba, ranked 10th in the AFCA poll, improves to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. Wingate drops to 4-3 and 1-2. The Indians have won five straight meetings between the two schools. Catawba leads the all-time (senior college) series between the two schools 13-3.
The main beneficiary of Samples' hot hand was sophomore wide receiver Corey Ready (Aiken, SC), who grabbed six passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Catawba's top receiver this season with 40 catches for 628 yards (and five TDs), Ready caught a six-yard scoring strike from Samples with 1:24 to go in the second quarter to give the Indians a 21-0 halftime lead.
Wingate got on the board with 8:13 to play in the third quarter when junior quarterback Stuart Card (Red Oak, VA) scored on a one-yard sneak. Junior place kicker Chris Brewer (Weddington, NC) added the PAT to make it 21-7. Card's run capped an eight-play, 74-yard drive for the hosts.
Ready chalked up his second score on the next drive. Samples and Ready connected on a 70-yard scoring play to restore the Indians' three-touchdown lead with 5:08 remaining in the third frame. The two teams traded touchdowns to account for the final margin.
Bulldog junior fullback David Brinkley (Fort Wayne, IN) caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from Card at the 2:52 plateau of the third quarter. Catawba answered, as junior tailback Rodney Wallace (Bamberg, SC) tallied on a four-yard run with 13:06 to play in the fourth quarter.
Wallace rushed 21 times for 95 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore running back Mario Crowe (Charlotte, NC) carried 15 times for 88 yards and one touchdown. Crowe had a four-yard scoring run in the first quarter to give the Indians a 14-0 lead. Catawba sophomore wide receiver Rod Tenor (Coollemee, NC) caught a three-yard TD pass from Samples at the 9:19 mark of the first quarter to open the scoring.
The Catawba defense held Wingate to 47 net yards rushing. Indian senior linebacker Khanis Hubbard (Raleigh, NC) had two quarterback sacks. Catawba sophomore linebacker SaMario Houston (Charlotte, NC) had an interception and three pass break-ups.
Wingate senior wide receiver Erie Williams (Greer, SC) caught four passes for 51 yards. Bulldog junior tailback Antonio Hailstock (Greenville, SC) rushed 17 times for 54 yards. Card completed 11-of-29 passes for 191 yards and one TD. For the Bulldog defense, Cody Moore (Gastonia, NC) had a career-high 15 tackles (11 solo, four assists). Moore had two tackles for losses. Jaquion Gholston (Syracuse, NY) also notched 15 tackles (seven solo, eight assists).
