Women's Lacrosse Tops Mount Olive 11-10
SALSIBURY, N.C. -- Catawba rallied from an early 4-1 deficit then held on to grab an 11-10 victory over visiting Mount Olive in women’s lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians move to 2-2 with their first victory over the Trojans in six tries. Mount Olive falls to 2-1.
Catawba scored a minute into the game, but Michaela Ciciarelli started and ended a four-goal spurt for the Trojans that put the guests up 4-1 after six minutes. The Lady Indians responded with a 6-1 run to end the half with Katie Barth and Erin Green each scoring twice.
Green and Nicole Hunt continued the run into the second half as the Lady Indians built a 9-5 edge with 15 minutes remaining. Mount Olive would chip into the lead, scoring three of the next four goals, two by Jackie Kaderabek to close within 10-8 with 9:32 to go.
Becky Frost scored the final goal for Catawba on a free-position shot with 8:57 left and outlasted the Trojans. Mount Olive cut the margin to 11-9 on the first of two tallies by Kiara Burke in the final three minutes. The last came with just 23 seconds to play. Nicole Hunt won the ensuing draw control for the Lady Indians and Catawba ran out the clock to take the win.
Green led Catawba with three goals, while Barth and Imani Grays had a pair of goals. Gianna Pezzulo handed out a pair of assists. Madison Anselmo collected a dozen saves in goal, including eight in the second half.
Burke produced six points on the day for Mount Olive, scoring four goals with two helpers. Ciciarelli added three goals. Siena Miller stopped 14 shots in the pipes.
Mount Olive held a slight lead in shots (31-29) and ground balls (29-26) with Catawba gaining one more draw control. A key stat was free-position shots. Catawba went 4-of-9, while the Trojans made only 1-of-8 and could not score on seven free-position shots in the second half.
Catawba hosts Rollins on Friday at 7 pm.
