Women's Basketball Falls to Newberry
NEWBERRY, S.C. - - The Catawba Lady Indians dropped a South Atlantic Conference game to host Newberry in women’s basketball action on Wednesday in Eleazer Arena. Catawba fell to the Wolves 39-59, dropping them to 13-13 overall and 11-8 in the SAC. Newberry improved to 15-11 and 10-9 in the conference.
The Lady Indians shot 21% from the field and was led by Taisha DeShazo
’s eight points. Elizabeth Webb
added seven points for Catawba. Newberry shot 42% from the field. Meg Essex and Courtney Lyons led the Wolves with 15 points each.
The first 10-minute period was a battle for the lead with five score ties. A free throw gave Newberry a one point advantage with under a minute left in the first quarter. DeShazo hit a jump shot to give the Lady Indians a one point edge to begin the second 10-minutes.
The second quarter continued to be a tight competition. Two free throws from Webb put Catawba ahead by three with just a minute remaining in the half. Samara Hill hit a three with three seconds to go to send the Lady Indians and Wolves to the break in a 27-all tie.
Newberry took control of the game in the third quarter. The Wolves built their lead to double-digits in the fourth quarter, finishing with a 20 point advantage at the final buzzer.
The Lady Indians will travel to Mars Hill to conclude their regular season on Saturday at 2 pm.
