Baseball Hits 11 Doubles and 5 Home Runs in Win Over Coker
SALISBURY, N.C. - - The Catawba Indians scored 26 runs on 24 hits in South Atlantic Conference baseball action against the visiting Coker Cobras on Friday evening in Newman Park. The 26-1 victory improves Catawba’s record to 5-9 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while dropping Coker to 9-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The Indians scored seven runs on six hits in the bottom half of the first inning. The second inning was scoreless for both teams. Catawba added six runs on three hits in the third and two more runs and hits in the fourth. The Indians recorded another run on two hits in the six before posting a nine hit and nine run inning in the seventh. Catawba tallied one more run on one hit in the bottom of the eight before allowing Coker to score their only run in the top of the ninth.
Riley Myers picked up his second win of the season pitching six shut-out innings. He allowed only four hits and two walks while striking out 11. Jackson Raper led the offense with five hits, including three doubles and a home run.
Kyle Smith went 4-for-6 with all four hits being doubles. His four doubles tied Chance Bowden’s record for doubles in a game which was set in 2016. As a team, Catawba hit 11 doubles, tying the school record set in 2002 against Pfeiffer.
Luke Setzer hit a pair of home runs. Hunter Shepherd and Bowden also added home runs for the Indians. Joe Butts, Jacob Nester, Trevor Atwood, and Harrison Baucom recorded the remaining doubles for Catawba.
The Indians will continue the opening SAC series against Coker tomorrow with a double header beginning at 1 pm in Newman Park.
