Bowden Goes 8-for-8 in Doubleheader Against Coker
SALISBURY, N.C. - - Chance Bowden went 8-for-8 on the day, including a double that set the new school record for career doubles with 70, in Saturday’s doubleheader against visiting Coker. The Catawba Indians swept the series with the Cobras, defeating them 16-4 in game one of the doubleheader and 15-5 in game two. Catawba improves to 7-9 overall and 3-0 in the South Atlantic Conference, while Coker falls to 9-4 and 0-3 in the SAC.
Clay Young earned the win for the Indians in game one, pitching 5.2 innings. He allowed only two runs, one earned, on four hits with nine strikeouts. Bowden led the offense going 4-for-4 with three RBIs, which included the double that broke the school record. Joe Butts hit his second career home run and Luke Setzer added a triple for the Indians.
Hunter Shepherd posted his second win of the season in game two. He allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits while striking out five over 4.1 innings. Bowden led the offense again going 4-for-4 with seven RBIs on three home runs and a triple. Cameron Morrison and Kyle Smith also had home runs in game two. Jackson Raper, Joe Butts, and Jacob Nester all had a double during game two for the Indians.
Coker scored first in the top of the second inning of game one, but Catawba answered with three runs in the bottom of the third. The Indians added two runs on two hits in the fifth and seven runs on four hits in the sixth. The Cobras were able to post two runs in the top of the seventh. Catawba continued to score recording two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Coker tallied one more in the top of the ninth.
Catawba jumped on the board quick in game two, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Indians tallied seven runs in the second, four of which came from Smith’s grand slam. Catawba posted five additional runs in the third to make the score 14-0. Coker was able to get on the board in the top of the fifth scoring five runs. The Indians added just one more run in the bottom of the fifth before keeping the Cobra’s scoreless the remainder of the game to make the final score 15-5.
Catawba will travel to UNC Pembroke for a midweek non-conference game on Wednesday at 3 pm.
