Swimming Sets Three School Marks at Royal Open; Barreto to Swim at Nationals
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Catawba set three school records over the weekend at the Royal Invite held at Queens’ Levine Center Pool. In addition, Joao Barreto qualified to swim three events the upcoming NCAA II Swimming and Diving Championships which will be held March 14-17 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
Barreto has earned his way to swim the 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 free at the championships. Barreto will concentrate on the two fly events as the 100 fly and 200 free will be contested on the same day at the championships.
At the Royal Open, Barreto set a school record in the 200 fly with a swim of 1:48.07 on Saturday. That swim knocked Michael King off the top spot. King had set the 200 fly record on Friday with a time of 1:49.70 to hold the mark for a day.
Barreto added top ten swims in the 200 free and 100 fly. His 100 fly was time of 48.20 was fifth best all-time and the 200 free time of 1:40.23 was sixth best. Both were just over a second and a half off the school record. He had the 12th best swims in the 50 free (20.99) and the 100 free (45.66). He was just under a second and a half off the 100 mark and .75 seconds from the 50 record.
The men’s 200 medley relay team posted the ninth-best swim with a time of 1:31.17, it was a second and half off the school record. Swimming the relay was Federico Borrego Higareda, Lukas Helbing, Barreto and Gatlin Saylors. Higareda had the 20th best swim in the 100 breast, finishing at 56.93 and 1.66 seconds off the school mark.
The other record of the weekend was set by Jess Daniel. Daniel clocked a 100 fly time of 58.30 to set a new standard. She nearly set the 200 fly mark a few minutes later, missing by a tenth of second with a time of 2:12.88. Claire Featherstone posted the third best time in a 50 free with a time of 24.28 with was four-tenths off the record. Featherstone had a 100 back time of 57.86 which was .66 seconds off her own record.
