Softball Fights Back to Split DH With Lees-McRae
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba and visiting Lees-McRae split a softball doubleheader at Whitley Field on Saturday afternoon. Lees-McRae took the opener 4-1, while the Catawba Indians grabbed game two by the identical 4-1 score. Catawba is now 9-7 on the year, while the Bobcats are 5-13.
Catawba took an early lead in the opener. Carlee Brawley led off with one of her two hits, stole second and came around to score on an error off a sacrifice bunt by Taylor Martin. LMC answered in the second, scoring off a wild pitch and an infield fielder’s choice to lead 2-1.
The scored was unchanged until the seventh, when the Bobcats tacked on a pair of unearned runs. A two-out throwing error with on one on base led to the outburst. Both runs scored on another error in the inning.
Sarah Tucker and Katie Robinson each had three hits for Lees-McRae. Karly McRary had the only RBI in game one. Kara Cunningham (5-6) claimed the win. She gave up one unearned run off six hits with a pair of walks and seven strikeouts.
Jordan Dean’s two-run double in the bottom of the first of game two gave Catawba a quick 2-0 edge in game two. Brawley doubled home a run in the second and Nicole Hunter made her first made her first collegiate hit memorable has she led off the fourth with a home run to stake the Lady Indians a 4-0 lead.
Madison Hunter (5-0) made those runs hold up, allowing just a single run off a sacrifice fly by Cunningham in the sixth. The freshman gave up just two hits, walked two and fanned six. Nicole Hunter finished with two hits.
Catawba travels to Limestone on Sunday for a 1 pm doubleheader. The Lady Indians are at home Tuesday against King.
