Baseball Falls to #2 Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. - - The Catawba Indians baseball team traveled to host University of Tampa for a midweek non-conference game on Tuesday evening. Catawba fell to #2 Tampa 9-5 dropping the Indians to 8-12 for the season, while improving the Spartans to 13-3.
Jacob Nester led the Indians offense going 2-for-2 and scoring two runs. Kyle Smith, Chance Bowden, Cameron Morrison, and Lee Poteat each added a hit for Catawba. Clay Young took the loss for the Indians.
The Spartans scored first in the bottom of the second inning and again in the third to take a quick 3-0 lead. Nester singled up the middle in the top of the fifth and scored on a wild pitch to put the first run on the board for the Indians.
Bowden hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth after Smith singled to score Poteat to put up a three run half-inning for Catawba and to tie the score a 4-all. Tampa put two more across the plate in the bottom to retake the lead. The Indians were able to score one more run in the seventh before giving up three runs in the eighth.
The Indians will play game two of the two-game series against the Spartans on Wednesday at 6 pm.
