Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Chestnut Hill 16-15
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba held on to take a 16-15 win over visiting Chestnut Hill in women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians level their record at 4-4, while the Griffins fall to 1-1.
Down 16-11, Chestnut Hill scored four straight goals in about a four-minute span to get within 16-15 with 4:35 remaining. The Griffins won the ensuing draw control and earned a free-position shot with 3:23 left, but Erin Green was able to cause a turnover. Chestnut Hill got one more possession with just over a minute to play, but another turnover allowed Catawba to run out the remainder of the clock.
Green led Catawba with six goals and scored three in the opening seven minutes as the Lady Indians raced to a 4-0 edge. Katie Barth scored consecutive goals and Imani Grays added another as the lead went to 9-3 at the 8:11 mark of the opening half. Two goals by Julia Galantich helped Chestnut Hill get within 10-5 at the break.
Goals from Galantich, Hunter Leckonby and two by Spencer Fitzgerald closed the gap to 11-9 in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Catawba responded with Green scoring a pair of goals in a run that gave the Lady Indians a 15-10 edge with 10:29 left. Barth had the final goal for the Lady Indians with 9:14 to go before the rally from the Griffins.
Barth and Becky Frost followed Green with three goals for Catawba. Gianna Pezzulo had two goals and four assists, while Nicole Hunt had a goal and five helpers. Galantich and Fitzgerald each had five goals for Chestnut Hill. Leckonby had a goal and two assists, while Julia Reinert and Haley Norwillo each had a goal and one assist.
Catawba opens conference play on Saturday, hosting Newberry in a 4 pm start.
