Smith and Butts Lead Offense in Midweek Loss to #2 Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. - - The Catawba Indians dropped game two of the two game series to the #2 Tampa Spartans on Wednesday evening. The 8-12 loss drops Catawba to 8-13 for the season, while Tampa improves to 14-3.
Kyle Smith and Joe Butts led Catawba’s offense each going 3-for-5, tallying a RBI, and scoring a run. Chance Bowden added two hits, a run, and a RBI.
The Spartans scored first in the bottom of the first inning, but the Indians responded and Butts scored on a Smith double down the right field line. Tampa recorded another run in the second inning and both teams plated a run in the third.
After a scoreless fourth, Catawba posted a three run fifth inning. Jackson Raper earned the first RBI of the inning on a single to left field. Bowden scored on a wild pitch and Butts followed with a single up the middle to score Raper.
Tampa added nine runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 12-5 lead. The Indians were able to tally three more runs, while holding the Spartans scoreless to cut the deficit to four.
Catawba will travel to Carson-Newman for a South Atlantic Conference series beginning on Friday with a double header. First pitch is set for noon.
