Volleyball outlasts Lenoir-Rhyne in five gamesSALISBURY, NC – Catawba College held off Lenoir-Rhyne in five games to defeat the visiting Bears 30-16, 30-26, 25-30, 23-30 and 15-12 in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians improve to 13-11 overall and 6-4 in the SAC, while Lenoir-Rhyne drops to 13-15 and 3-6. Catawba easily won the opening game, using an eight-point run midway through the game to take an 18-7 edge. The Bears closed within 20-13, but another run by Catawba pushed the edge to 24-13. Catawba would grab a 10-6 lead in the second game after three straight kills by Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC), but the Bears would hang tough tying the game at 18-18 on a kill and ace by Kathryn Phillips (Lexington, NC). Catawba scored three straight points, but LR would claw within 22-21 after a kill by Brandi Rickert (Huntersville, NC). Hewitt would again provide a spurt for Catawba with a block and two kills to push the lead to 25-22. Leading 26-25, the Lady Indians got two kills, including the game-winner, from Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) to win the game. Lenoir-Rhyne battled back to even the match by tacking games three and four. A four-point run in the third game, including a pair of kills by Leslie Hinkle (High Point, NC), gave the Bears a 17-16 lead. Hewitt posted a pair of kills to keep Catawba within a point, but another four-point run upped the Bear advantage to 25-20 and provided the winning margin. The Bears would again rally in the fourth game. After leading early, the Bears saw Catawba take the lead on a kill and block by Harrison at 11-10. A pair of kills by Hope Miller (Newton, NC) put the Lady Indians up 16-14, but Rebekah Steinlin (Columbia, SC) had consecutive kills and an ace to put LR up 18-17. Tied at 22-22, the Bears scored eight of the last nine point, three coming on kills by Steinlin, to even the match. The teams traded points early in the fifth game, but Catawba scored four of five points midway through the game to take a 12-8 lead. Heather Hawkins (Troutman, NC) had two kills and a block in the run. A kill by Hewitt put Catawba up 13-9, but the Bears would reel off three straight points, two on kills by Angela Danley (Snellville, GA), to close within 13-12. A hitting error would give Catawba a game point and Harrison delivered a kill to close out the match. Harrison led Catawba with 17 kills, followed by Hawkins with 16. Miller and Hewitt each had 14 kills, with Miller adding 29 digs. Setter Nicole Scheidt (China Grove, NC) had 63 assists. Steinlin had a dozen kills to pace the Bears, while Hinkle added 11. Kelsey Baby (Clearwater, FL) had 23 digs, with Rickert providing 41 assists.
