Softball Loses Pair to Emmanuel
FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. -- Catawba visited Emmanuel losing both games in a softball doubleheader at the Lions Den on Friday afternoon. Emmanuel took both games with a 3-2 score in the first and a 4-2 score in the second. Catawba is now 11-11 on the year, while the Lions are 7-11.
It would be a quiet opener with no runs being scored until the fourth inning. The Lady Indians’ Delane Smith would hit her fourth homerun on the first pitch to score the first run of the game.
Emmanuel would rally in the fifth to put three runs on the board. Morgan Franklin walked, Meredith Reece singled and Alannah Long knocked in all three runs with a two-out homerun.
Catawba would try to even the score in the seventh but would fall short by a run. Taylor Martin led off with a single, while Carlee Brawley added a two-out single. Beth Ann Martin got a run in on an infield single. Smith walked to load the bases, but the Lions got a strikeout to end the game.
Emmanuel pushed across a single run in each of the first two innings of game two. Catawba cut the lead in half in the sixth as Jordan Dean singled home Taylor Martin, who had led off the frame with a double. Emmanuel came right back with two in the bottom of the sixth as Sydney Driver singled home both runs on a two-out single.
The Lady Indians started the seventh with back-to-back doubles by Gracie Gibson and Sydney Goertzen to draw within 4-2. Emmanuel retired the next three batters to take the win.
Catawba travels to Southern Wesleyan on Saturday for a 1 pm doubleheader.
