Eakes Sets Records For Face-Off Wins and Ground Balls in Win Over Newberry
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba opened South Atlantic Conference men’s lacrosse action with a 13-9 victory over visiting Newberry on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 4-4 and 0-1.
Catawba used a four-goal run to start the fourth quarter to secure the win in a game it dominated statistically. The Indians held a 58-24 edge in shots, grabbed 46 ground ball to 18 for Newberry and won 23 of 26 face-offs. Despite the edge, Newberry trailed just 9-8 after three quarters, mainly on the back of goalie Erick Szurley, who stopped 22 shots.
The Indians scored the first three goals and led 4-1 after a quarter. Dalton Cook, who finished with a game-high five goals, picked up two of those in the opening 15 minutes. Newberry twice closed within a goal in the second with Joe Barber getting a Catawba goal with just four second left before the half to give the Indians a 7-5 edge at the break.
Barber and Cook scored to start the second half for Catawba, but Newberry tallied the last three to draw within 9-8. Chase Scott tallied twice on assists from Cook in the fourth and when Cook netted his final goal, Catawba led 12-8 with 7:42 left.
Cook added three assists to his five goals. Scott had two goals and an assist with Barber scoring twice. Connor Eakes went 22-of-25 on face-offs and scooped up 20 ground balls. The face-off wins and ground balls set school records.
Dylan Mansur notched two goals with two assists for Newberry. Matt Cromie and Belton Bryan each had two goals and one assist.
Catawba is on the road at Coker on Thursday for a 3:30 pm start.
