Elwell Earns Second Win as Baseball Defeats CN
JEFFERSON CITY, T.N. - - Michael Elwell earned his second win of the season as the Catawba Indians defeated host Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon. The 5-2 decision earns the Indians the series win and improves Catawba to 10-14 overall and 6-3 in the SAC, while dropping the Eagles to 14-8 and 6-3 in the conference.
Elwell allowed just two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings. Clay Young recorded his first save of the season allowing no runs, hits, or walks, while striking out three over two innings. Chance Bowden led the offense with three hits, a RBI, and two runs scored. Kyle Smith, Heath Mitchem, and Lee Poteat each added two hits for the Indians.
The game began with two scoreless innings with Carson-Newman plating two runs in the bottom of the third. Smith scored the first run for the Indians in the top of the fifth on a triple by Bowden. Jackson Raper tied the game at two runs by scoring Bowden on a single to left field.
Bowden scored his second run of the game in the top of the seventh on a fielder’s choice for Mitchem. Another fielder’s choice allowed Luke Setzer to score the second run of the inning. Cameron Morrison was hit by a pitch and scored Mitchem to record the final run.
The Indians will return to Newman Park for a five game home stretch beginning on Monday as they host Indiana, PA for a non-conference game at 5 pm.
