Baseball Recorded 15 Hits in Win Against IUP
SALISBURY, N.C. - - The Catawba Indians recorded 15 hits in baseball action against visiting Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday. Catawba outscored Indiana 16-6 to improve their record to 11-15, while Indiana falls to 3-9.
Joe Butts led the Indians going 4-for-5 with a RBI. Kyle Smith added three hits and three runs. Chance Bowden and Luke Setzer each tallied two hits, four RBI, and scored three runs for Catawba. Ryan Kahny earned his first win of the season allowing one run on three hits over 1.2 innings.
Smith led off the bottom of the first with a double to right field. Heath Mitchem hit into an unconventional double play which allowed Smith to score before the third out for the Indians to put a run on the board.
Catawba recorded six runs on five hits and three errors in the bottom of the third to take a 7-0 lead. Indiana earned one run back in the top of the fourth and tallied four in the fifth to cut the lead to 7-5.
The Indians and Crimson Hawks tallied runs in the bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh, respectively. Catawba plated five runs on four hits, including a three-run home run from Setzer in the bottom of the seventh and three additional runs in the eighth.
Catawba will return to Newman Park and South Atlantic Conference action on Friday evening at 6 pm against Tusculum.
