Softball Falls to #2 North Georgia in a Doubleheader
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba fell to visiting North Georgia in a softball doubleheader at Whitley Field on Thursday afternoon. The Nighthawks, ranked #2 in NCAA II, took the opener 7-0 and then again in the second 7-3. The Lady Indians are now 12-13 on the year, while the Nighthawks are 30-1.
North Georgia would break the silence of the game scoring their first run in the fourth inning. Sydney Sprague's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded knocked in the initial run. It would not be until the sixth that the Nighthawks would pull away. All four of the runs were unearned as the Nighthawk inning was aided by a pair of errors and led to the 5-0 lead.
The Nighthawks would round out the game with two more runs in the seventh. Brittany Gilliam would score after a single to right field hit by Sprague. Sprague would score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Marley Stowers for the final margin. Carlee Brawley had two hits for Catawba.
The Lady Indians would be able to put some runs up on the board in Game two, but the Nighthawks did their damage with three home runs. Hobby Gregory had a two-run homer in the third, Brittany Gilliam a three-run shot in the fourth and Sprague a solo shot in the fifth. Those homers were three of the four North Georgia hits in game two.
Kyle Smith earned both wins for North Georgia to improve to 16-0. She struck out 10 over her six innings of the opener, allowing just two hits. Smith entered in relief twice in the nightcap and got our of a pair of jams with runners in scoring position. Huggins and Monica Taylor had two hits for Catawba.
Catawba travels to Lincoln Memorial on Saturday for a 1 pm doubleheader.
