Outdoor Track & Field Opens at 49er Classic and Braves Classic
Catawba opened its outdoor track and field season at two different meets this weekend. The majority of the distance runners competed at the Charlotte 49er Classic, while the sprinters and field competitors competed at the UNC Pembroke Braves Classic.
Catawba took a fifth place in the 4x800 relay. The team of Tom Joyce, AJ Meadows, Rontrel Felton and Ethan Bemis clocked in at 8:11.03. The top individual finish came from Michal Swepson, who was 25th in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:04.81. Also in the 3000 was Logan Bemis (9:26.29), Drew Lake (9:34.12) and Henry Brenner (9:51.42).
Abbie Adams was the top finisher for Catawba in the women’s 1500, posting a time of 4:55.79 to take 54th. She was followed by Patience Hunt (5:19.17), Jordan Hunt (5:49.09) and Lexie Petty (5:56.44). Ethan Bemis finished 74th in the men’s 1500 in a time of 4:07.21. Also in the race was Joyce (4:08.54) and Felton (4:21.53). Nikki Elminowski (19.13.62) was 55th in the women’s 5000 with Kyle Rhodes (15:41.43) claiming 64th in the men’s 5000. Curtis Carmack ran 15:45.12 in the 5000, while Lea Hartwig placed 70th in the women’s 800 in a time of 2:30.80.

For the men, Elyjah Thomas had a sixth-pace throw in the discus at 36.94m. He threw 29.92m in the javelin and was 12th, while his throw of 9.23m in the shot put was 13th. Alec Slusser had a 29.01m throw in the javelin. Jai Morrow was eighth in the long jump at 6.36m.
Samiyah Rasheed led the women throwers, finishing 12th in the javelin (19.52m) and 13th in the shot put (8.29m). Jhalisa Bell was 14th in the discus at 24.19m and had a throw of 19.19m in the javelin. Hiedi Mueller had a 7.98m throw in the shot put and a 22.58 throw in the discus.
Taylor Marshall posted the top finish with a seventh-place in the women’s 400 meter hurdles. She posted a time of 1:14.85. Siearra Emmerson had a time of 1:19.56. Austin Snide placed 10th in the men’s 1500 meters (4:25.11) with Slusser taking 16th in the men’s 400 (58.12). Evan Wimbish went 17th in the men’s 100 (11.34) and 23rd in the 200 (23.35). Morrow had a time of 12.08 in the 100.
Catawba competes at the adidas Winthrop Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
