Softball Spilts Doubleheader With #11 Lenoir-Rhyne
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba spilt with visiting Lenoir-Rhyne in a softball doubleheader at Whitley Field on Thursday afternoon. The Bears, ranked #11 in NCAA II, took the opener 2-1 and then the Lady Indians would take the second 8-1. The Lady Indians are now 14-15 on the year and 2-2 in conference, while the Bears are 26-5 overall and 3-1 in conference.
Lenoir-Rhyne would break the silence of the game scoring both of their runs in the fourth inning. With two runners on base Kylee Leonhardt doubled to left field on a 1-2 count. Mackenzie Cates and Erin Boone would score.
Catawba would finally score their one and only run of game one in the sixth inning. Jordan Dean would line out to shortstop would make a throwing error allowing Carlee Brawley to score. The game would end with a total of four hits on from both team for a score of 2-1.
The Lady Indians would come out with vengeance scoring four runs in the first. Delane Smith would reach first on an error by the second basemen making base loaded. A walk from Monica Taylor would score Allie Baker. Brawley scored from an error made by the pitcher followed by another error by the second basemen scoring Smith and Taylor.
The rest of the runs would be scattered over the game. Catawba would pick up one run in the third from a homerun from Jordan Dean on a 2-2 count. LR would follow with a run in the fourth Leonhardt doubled to left center scoring Boone. Catawba would also score in the fourth; Smith would RBI from a ground out to shortstop scoring Baker. The Lady Indians would collect their last two runs in the fifth. Dean would score from error made by the right fielder on a hit from Taylor Martin. Martin scored on a ground out to the pitcher hit by Beth Ann Martin.
The Bears would have a total of six errors in the second game to Catawba’s one. Madison Hunter would take the win for Catawba improving to 7-3 and only giving up five hits the entire game. Emily Kenley would take the loss for the Bears falling to 13-2 giving up five hits in four innings. Kimberly Blair would pitch for the Bears for two innings giving up an additional three hits.
Catawba host Mars Hill on Saturday for a 1 pm doubleheader.
