Softball Rolls Past #21 Queens
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba swept visiting Queens, ranked 21st in NCAA II, in a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader at Whitley Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Indians took game one 5-2 and shutout the Royals 8-0 within five innings in game two. The Lady Indians are now 18-15 on the year and 6-2 in conference, while the Royals are 27-7 overall and 4-4 in conference.
Queens scored a run in the first inning of the opener. Madison Ackerman singled to left center scoring Sydney Ditto. It would be the second inning before Catawba would strike back. Carlee Brawley put Catawba on top with a two-run double to right, scoring both Jordan Dean and Monica Taylor.
The Lady Indians would add to their lead with three more in the third inning. Delane Smith doubled to left field scoring Kaylee Cook and later scored on a wild pitch. Brawley would reach on an error that scored Katelyn Jones.
The Royals second run would come in fifth from a Gemma Miller sacrifice to score Elaina Frantellizzi.
Madison Hunter grabbed the win for Catawba improving to 8-3 as she allowed just two hits while striking out seven. Courtney Pearson took the loss for Queens falling to 11-5. She allowed seven hits and walked one.
Catawba would break open game two with four runs in the secodn. Smith would get things started with her seventh homerun over right center on a 0-1 count. Taylor would score on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Martin. Sierrah McCarthy stole home and Allie Baker added a RBI single to cap the frame.
The Lady Indians would collect another two runs in the fourth from Brawley hitting a base hit to second base scoring Dean and Sydney Goertzen. Catawba’s final two runs would come in the fifth and final inning of game two. Dean would get things rolling with a double to left field. Brawley singled to right field to score Dean. THe game ended when McCarthy stole home again as Queens tried to pick off a runner at first.
Brooke Walser hurled the shutout, giving up only three hits and having a total of six strike outs. Shannon McGuire took the loss for Queens pitching two innings giving up five hits and three walks. Ali Celiberti would also pitch two innings giving up an additional four hits and another walk. Walser would improve to 5-8 and McGuire would fall to 11-1.
Catawba travels to Tusculum on Friday for a 1 pm doubleheader.
