Green's Seven Points Helps Lead Women's Lacrosse Past Coker
HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Catawba pulled away in the second half to post a 21-13 win over host Coker in South Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at the Coker Athletic Field. The Catawba Indians stay unbeaten in league play, moving to 8-5 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 1-7, 0-2.
Leading 8-7 at the break. Catawba got goals from Nicole Hunt and Brooklyn Tilley to go up 10-7 and grab its largest lead to that point. Katie Barth scored two of her four goals in just over a minute to push the margin to 14-10 with 14:41 remaining. The Lady Indians put the game away during a six-minute span when they scored four unanswered goals for an 18-11 lead with 6:44 left.
Catawba scored the opening two goals of the game, but Coker rallied behind Faith Kent and Haley McCusker to go up 6-4 of the 7:41 mark of the first half. Kent scored the first three goals with McCusker running off three straight after Tilley had put Catawba up 4-3. Catawba retook the lead on goals from Kennadi Holt, Barth and Becky Frost and would not trail again.
The Lady Indians held a big edge in shots with a 57-37 advantage, but Cassie Williams made 18 saves for the Cobras. Catawba won the battle of free-position shots, scoring on eight of 13 attempts, while Coker went 4-of-13.
Erin Green totaled seven points in the game for Catawba with four goals and three assists. Barth had her four goals with Hunt scoring three and helping on two. Tilley also tallied three goals. Hannah Scott and Imani Grays each caused four turnovers with Scott grabbing seven ground balls.
Kent recorded six goals with an assist for Coker. McCusker followed with five goals. Kent caused four turnovers and won 13 draw controls.
Catawba returns home to Shuford Stadium on Saturday, hosting Mars Hill at noon.
